Size 8 is great. These ads are not.

Ever since I started seeing ads with supposed “plus size” models, people have had to stop me from literally ripping apart the pages. Or tell me to lower my voice when yelling at the TV. Or suggest I tone down my language when sending emails to the companies in question. This article, using the example of the Dove ad campaign, questions if it’s any better for our mental health to show a heavier model instead of a skinny one. Unfortunately, according to a study, it is still problematic.

Here is the obvious problem, which most of the comments agreed on: these models are not “plus size.” Maybe in the cut throat fashion industry, maybe in the world of this ad. You know it and I know it. The advertisers are too afraid to show a REAL “plus size“ woman, because that would be too shocking and taboo for the public. Even though there are so many fat woman in the country. It would however give them attention. God forbid they show cellulite and a big BELLY or ass, which the models in this Dove ad don’t even have! PLUS, those woman may not even be real. They could be computer-generated for all we know. Another consensus in the comments is that ALL sizes should be represented. Yes yes yes of course. Better yet, don’t show any models at all. Show the damn product. Oh but look how confident and happy these women look! They are happy cause they are getting paid. If a model--whether size 2 or size 8--makes a girl feel bad about themselves, that girl needs to work on viewing this negative influence indifferently and find a significant other that feels the same. -- weigh cool

Feed (2005)
A critic from horror-sci fi-gore entity Fangoria called it "one of the sickest films i have ever seen." The quote is on the cover of the DVD. Really? Come on man, you're from Fangoria and you think a guy feeding a woman is one of the sickest? I mean, surely you've seen Dead Alive. Anyways, there are indeed a few sick things happening in this lowish budget movie. The physically fit but mentally tormented Phillip feeds his immobile woman the fat from a previous victim--yes, the unwavering cop from Australia has uncovered his masterplan of feeding them to death, while losers on the internet place their bets. Now, the question as to why a cop from Australia needs to go to the other side of the world to the middle of the United States is besides the point. Don't bother him, he's got his own psychological sex issues, to which Feed gives almost as much attention. Production value wise, Feed isn't anything special. This is largely due to the obese woman not being taken seriously, as her awful speaking lines potray her as helpless and dumb, plus an obvious "fatsuit" or whatever kind of latex they put on her. It's nice that this "fetish" called "feederism" (which will be examined further at fat aint bad) gets its own movie. The problem with this movie--and it's a HUGE problem, no pun intended--is that, to the unintiated, it gives feederism a bad name. Death by obesity is never the goal of a feeder. There's a very small percentage into immobility but that is far from the "norm" in this fetish "community". The act of feeding your "partner" is usually a hundred times more innocent, and varies greatly from person to person. Feed only looks at an extreme case of one person effed up in the head. Hamming it up on WWE. [or] the 5th grade humor of Michelle McFool [or] i heart Mickie James.

Mickie James of WWE has been my #1 female contender since she first appeared in a storyline as a nutcase obsessed with Trish Stratus. She's spunky, a good wrestler and she's not rail thin like Michelle McCool or Alicia Fox. Not rail thing!? My Goodness! Yes, her legs and arms are a little bigger than the other "divas." Big woop. Honestly, i wonder how some of these other girls aren't broken in half! So for the past couple months on WWE's Smackdown, there's been a storyline that rallies elementary school-level bullying by Michelle McCool and sidekick (and can't wrestle for shit) Layla against the respectful and hot Mickie James. They start calling her "Piggy James," they make jokes about her (namely saying she's fat) and bring out pig-related props. This climaxxed (sp?) with them assembling food in the ring to put into James' face and Layla in a fatsuit, failing to impersonate James. The other nite at Royal Rumble, James took the title from Michelle McCool in less time that it takes to heat up Uncle Ben's jasmine rice in the pouch. And then the other girl wrestlers came out with food to throw in MICHELLE's face.

Well that's the end of that crap. For now.

Obviously anyone who knows anything about women's bodies are not going to think Mickie James is FAT. So why even listen to the mocking? James was listening and actually cried a couple times after the insults. That crying could have been real for all we know. Rumors online are that the company isn't keen on James focusing time on other things, like country singing. So they're just doing this for spite. More likely it's a storyline that James has no problems with. i mean, this whole thing can actually be a stunt so James has an excuse to say on television "this is what a REAL woman looks like," while McCool and Layla are just playing their parts and getting paid mad dollars. The point is, this is one of thoses cases in WWE where the line between fiction and fact blurs. Whatever the case, this is trash!

Fat Girl (2001, France) You can try bracing for an inevitable shocking scene in this beautiful film, but it's unlikely you will see it coming. The pseudo foreshadowing within the last 20 minutes only resulted in being thrown for a loop. [continued below]

At only 12 years old, the highly intelligent and adorable Anais (the "fat girl," who really isn't that fat) is forced to tag along with her older sister, who hooks up with and is manipulated by an older guy. He claims his French isn't that great, but he actually sounds very fluent and easily seduces the naive Elena. Half the film centers on that relationship (a working title for the film had also been Two Girls, while the French title is To My Sister) and Anais is forced to bear witness to her sister's actions. In fact, there is a lengthy bedroom scene with those actions that should have been cut by about 10 minutes. Otherwise, Fat Girl is brilliant. While Elena expresses what she thinks is love and sex, the young Anais counters that with a profound statement about what her "first time" should be like. Basically, this is a unique, challenging film that needn't be ignored. [rating: 4.5/5] - weigh cool

Seriously, what took so long. Watermelon! Apple! Cherry! Sounds incredible. Jelly Belly is genius. Hold on, not really. There's also buttered popcorn and bubblegum. That's just...wrong. And i would have tried some of these but they all have expiration dates from four months ago! The reviews i found online are not kind to this product, so it makes sense. Now it is only a curiosity. At least there is Earth Wise's perfect watermelon JUICE! Thank you thank you thank you.

They did it again! They did it again! National Enquirer put Beth Ditto on the cover for like the tenth time. Not because she's in a great band (oh no, god forbid!). It's cause she's one of many "celebrities" with "deadly diets." The cover of the December 14, 2009 issue also has a huge Aretha Franklin (300 lbs they say) and an emaciated Courtney Love and Tori Spelling. For the life of me, i had no luck finding that image online and didn't feel like scanning the actual magazine, however i did find that Ditto has been on the cover AT LEAST four times for the same reason. And again, they always put that "guess who"? over her head. LAME.

Me here at *fat ain't bad* encourage fat acceptance, but make no mistake about it, me encourage HEALTHY overweightness. Me being vegetarian, any vegetarian/vegan eatery is supported here. Something to note, however, is that just because you're vegetarian doesn't mean you're healthy. Think about that. If you're not getting enough carbs, fats, proteins, etc, it's gonna catch up to you. Oh don't think it won't cause it WILL! That's another story. For now, here's me giving publicity to two popular spots in Manhattan and Brooklyn which me visited recently. Curly's is a small compact restaurant that has drawings posted all over the wall. Drawings i would assume were done by customers when they were there. Of all the things i could have ordered, i goofed and got soy chick nuggets. There were plenty of other plates being served that looked more exciting. Such as the breakfast meal.

Foodswings i had been hearing about for years. People RAVING about the place. Having been toZen Palate already, i always pictured Foodswings to be more of a "restaurant," like a luncheon diner type place. Well actually, it's pretty small, like the size of a typical Subway or Quiznos. Some of the best choices from there are the fake bbq chicken drumsticks and the wide assortment of soymilk shakes. ALL VEGAN.

Despite being produced/endorsed by Oprah Winfrey and starring Mariah Carey (of the failed Glitter), the trailer for Precious--which OPENS WIDE this friday--suggests solid performances by the entire cast, including newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who is a little older than the 16-year-old she plays. Although she DID also grow up in Harlem. The film is destined to win awards, as it challenges the audience with several important subject matters. -Weigh Cool

In the Way of Control

We're kicking this off with Beth Ditto. It was either her or Kelly Clarkson. Recently, one nite, i told a girl she looked like Beth Ditto. This girl never heard of her or the Gossip (which was a shocking let down in itself, especially considering that we were at a bar where the DJs play the Gossip). To me, comparing someone to Ditto is a huge complement. She's charismatic, fronts a successful "controversial" band, she has a nice round face and most (or best) of all, she isn't ashamed of being fat. We can safely say that she does not give a SH*T. If only all girls had this confidence. Anyway, the girl i spoke to later told me (i assume after seeing trashy photos of Ditto) that she was at first offended, but then reluctantly took it as a complement because i respected Ditto so highly. She was offended because Ditto is fat and she probably thinks i was saying that she is fat too. And she thinks that's a bad thing. The word fat--even though so many Americans can be called that--is sadly looked at negatively. Yay, i was able to tie Beth Ditto into one of the main points of this blog. And yes, i would tie her up.
